JAMMU, Jan 19: The Shiromani Akali Dal ( National) has urged upon the State Government to formulate a panel of Sikh religious and legal luminaries to review the Sikh Gurdwara and Religious Endoment Act 1973 as per the Sikh code of conduct and traditions to make it functional and effective.
In a meeting of the core group of the SAD National held here today under the chairmanship of Prof Amrik Singh (vice president), it was   unanimously resolved to stress upon the Government to formulate a panel of Sikh Religious and legal luminaries to review the Gurdwara Act of 1973 to make it more effective. Prof Singh and Dayal Singh Wazir, general secretary said that the Act was enacted to provide better, clean and efficient management  to all the Gurdwaras in the State and to take care of all properties  and institutions built on it. The Act was meant to  preserve  the sanctity of Sikh shrines and to implement the Sikh code in all the shrines as laid down by the Sikh Gurus under the over all guidance of Akal Takhat Sahib.
They regretted that despite many elections and formulation of District Committees and State Boards, the Act has miserably failed to  and remained non-functional due to many basic lacunas. He said this act was enacted and drafted by some political people having vested interests in hush hush manner and it is needed to be reviewed for the larger interests of the Sikh community.
