KATHMANDU, May 25: Nepal’s photojournalist-turned-mountaineer Purnima Shrestha set a record on Saturday morning by becoming the first woman to summit the world’s tallest Mount Qomolangma three times in one climbing season.
The 33-year-old accomplished her third summit at 5:50 a.m. local time on Saturday, said Pemba Sherpa, executive director of 8K Expeditions which organized the expeditions.
“It is an unprecedented feat for her as no woman before her had ever climbed Mount Qomolangma thrice in a single season,” Sherpa said. Previously, Shrestha scaled the 8848.86-meter-high peak on May 12 and May 19 during this spring climbing season. She first summited in 2018.
Besides Mount Qomolangma situated on the border of Nepal and China, Shrestha has climbed Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), Mt. Annapurna I (8,091m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Makalu (8,463m) and K2 (8,611m). (UNI)
