JAMMU, Feb 5: The Governor, N N Vohra, has directed the General Administration Department (GAD) to ensure strict compliance of SRO 164 which prescribes that no Government servant is allowed to continue as an office bearer in any sports body without the State Government’s prior permission.
The Governor has directed immediate action in the matter.
The Raj Bhavan spokesperson disclosed that the Governor has taken a serious view about the report forwarded by the J&K State Sports Council which provides the names of office bearers of 53 Sports Associations in J&K. This report had been sought after a media report which alleged that a number of Government servants in J&K are occupying top positions in various Sports Associations without having procured the State Government’s prior permission.
With the implementation of this order, the bureaucrats, top Police Officers, besides Officers and Officials of various departments, who otherwise, prove to be stumbling-block in the promotion of sports in the State, will no longer continue to be the office bearers of any Sports Association.
It is pertinent to mention here that there are a total of 135 Sports Associations in the State, out of which 55 are recognized under J&K State Sports Council and the rest are unrecognized.
Reports said, hardly any Association is not headed by a bureaucrat, a top brass cop or an influential Government Officer or an Official, throwing the guidelines into the winds.
The premier Associations of the State including the elitist Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, Basketball Association, Football Association, Hockey Association, Badminton Association, Speedball Association, Volleyball Association, Wushu Association, Shooting Association, Handball Association, Tennis Ball Cricket Association and almost all other Associations.
Experts believe that the implementation of the order in letter and spirit will make an end of the road for those blue eyed people who were holding key posts in various Sports Associations for more than two terms, with the sole aim to use muscle power and grab hefty amount from the Council.
