JAMMU, Mar 6: For the first time in history of J&K Legislative Council, open voting is being held for the five seats, which are going to polls tomorrow.
Polling will be held from 10 a.m to 2 p.m and it will be followed by counting of votes from 3 p.m while the results are likely to be declared by 4 pm, informed Mohd Ramzan, Secretary J&K Assembly, who is the Returning Officer for the MLC elections.
The five seats include four from Kashmir Valley and one reserved for Doda district.
All the coalition candidates were in good position on four seats being contested by it as splinter BJP group of seven MLA seemed not willing to support the independent candidate Shiben Krishan Dudha, who is being backed by opposition PDP, JKNPP and BJP.
For the four seats in Kashmir Valley, the ruling alliance has fielded three candidates, namely; Abdul Majid Larmoo (NC), Shoukat Hussain Ganai (NC) and Muzaffar Parrey (Congress). PDP is contesting for only one seat and its candidate is Nayeem Akhtar. For Doda reserve seat, there is direct contest between Naresh Gupta of Congress and Mohd Iqbal of JKNPP.
Total 89 MLAs constituted the electoral college for the MLC elections.
Meanwhile, the coalition partner NC and Congress met this evening over a dinner meeting at the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s residence here and finalized the strategy for tomorrow’s election for MLC seats besides assigning of votes to its members.
The ruling alliance was confident of victory of its all four candidates, sources said.
