Oppn asks Govt not to use Budget to disturb level-playing field in poll-bound states

NEW DELHI : A day ahead of the Budget session, the Opposition today asked the Government not to announce any step in the Budget that could influence voters in favour of the ruling party, disturbing the level playing field in the upcoming election in five states.
”We urged them not to disturb the level-playing field or do any such thing as could harm other parties,” Leader of the main Opposition Congress in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters after coming out of the all-party meeting called by the Government in Parliament premises.
Mr Azad said that the Opposition parties also told the Government that it should have called the meeting after the first part of the first budget session whose agenda was limited to the passing of the budget, so that other issues could be discussed.
He also expressed disappointment that the ruling party did not agree to their demand to postpone the budget in view of the Assembly elections. ”Whereas we when we were in power had once done it on the BJP demand,” he added.
The Opposition had taken the matter to the Election Commission, which had given a go ahead to the Government on presentation of the Budget but on the condition that it would not make any announcement which could influence the voters in the poll bound states–UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.
