Over 2000 runners set to participate in Kashmir Int’l Marathon

SRINAGAR, Oct 19: Over 2,000 runners are set to participate in the first-ever Kashmir International Marathon, which will be held tomorrow along the banks of the scenic Dal lake.
Addressing a press conference, ahead of the event, Director of Tourism Kashmir, Raja Yaqoob said that there are 2,000 registrations from across the country, along with participation from athletes representing 13 different countries.
“We have some of the best athletes from across the world, including top Indian runners-Asian gold medalists. Additionally, we have strong participation from Kashmir as well,” he said.
The Director mentioned that the marathon will also feature top runners from Europe and Africa. “Overall, athletes from 13 countries, representing 59 nationalities, are participating,” he added.
The marathon will feature two races: a full marathon of 42 kilometers and a half marathon of 21 kilometers, with participants all excited for it.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will flag off the marathon from Polo View in the morning at 6 am. The full marathon will pass through various routes, with Kashmir University being one of the checkpoints, before finishing back at Polo View.
The Director of Tourism noted that the marathon will help promote various sectors of Kashmir, including handicrafts, cuisine, and other sectors that are globally recognized.
“These athletes will become brand ambassadors for Kashmir, as they have a massive fan following worldwide,” he said.
Sunita Godhara, the 1992 gold medalist, representing an elite team of 45 runners from the country, also spoke at the event. She expressed gratitude to the authorities, noting that some of the best runners are set to participate in the marathon.
She praised the local hospitality and called the marathon a first of its kind, with the highest-ever prize money in the country.
A Danish athlete expressed her excitement for the race, saying, “Running in these beautiful surroundings is a first for me, especially in the mountainous area.”
Another athlete, Justin from New Zealand, shared his hope that the local youth will come out to cheer for the athletes. “The temperature will be pleasant, and I hope people will come out and cheer for us. It will inspire the youngsters who should come early to see how it’s done,” he said.
Cecelia, another participant from Germany, praised Kashmir’s beauty and described the people as friendly and cheerful. “I’ve run in many countries, but being in Kashmir feels different,” she remarked.
Tiya, an athlete from Finland, said she looks forward to returning to Kashmir to explore its beauty and hospitality. She also expressed her enthusiasm for the race.
“I’m excited for the run and also eager to experience the positive atmosphere. It’s going to be beautiful and unique. The people are hospitable, and the weather is perfect,” she said.
