CHANDIGARH, Aug 3:
Indian ace Leander Paes and Sam Groth of Australia displayed better coordination as they stormed into the doubles final of the 1,654,295 dollars Citi Open ATP World Challenge Tennis Tournament at Washington DC.
They took one hour, nine minutes and 32 seconds to get the better of American pair of Steve Johnson and Sam Querry 4-6, 6-3 10-8 in the semi-final. Paes and Groth suffered an early setback as they were broken in the first game of the first set and Johnson and Querry won the set at 6-4 to take 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Paes and Groth broke their rivals in the fourth game to gain a vital 3-1 lead and the Indo-Australia pair made it one set all after clinching the second set at 6-3. They won the ninth game at love.
The match tie-breaker was a close affair. In a ding dong battle, Paes and Groth won by 10-8. The scores were tied at 4-4 and 5-5 before Paes and Groth wrapped up the semi-final contest.
Paes and Groth fired four aces while their rival recorded two aces. Both pairs committed two double faults apeice.
Paes and Groth won a total of 62 points out of 121 (51 per cent) and Johnson and Querry claimed total 59 points out of 121 (48 %). (AGENCIES)
