JAMMU, Nov 5: Demanding ST status for the Pahari speaking people in J&K, Pahari United Front organized a protest demonstration in front of the Divisional Commissioner’s officer, here today.
Led by Abdul Qadar Khan, the protesters, who included advocates, scholars and other social activists of the Pahari community, raised slogans in support of their demand. They also submitted memorandum to Government of India through Divisional Commissioner Jammu.
“We, the Pahari speaking people of J&K State, urge the Government of India to grant ST status to Pahari speaking tribe, at the earliest. The case is duly recommended by successive Governors and Chief Ministers of J&K State along with a resolution passed by the J&K State,” says the memorandum.
While addressing the protesters, president of the Front warned that patience of Pahari speaking people has reached the threshold point and they would not wait any more for getting the ST status, which was right.
He also threatened that the community may think of boycotting the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections or fielding their own candidates.
Others who addressed the protest dharna, included Advocate Sayed Majid Shah, Advocate Murtaza Jafri, Advocate Mazhar Ali Khan, Mohd Shakeel, Faisal Khan, Raj Kumar, Pardeep Kumar, Rajan Singh, Awais Mujtaba, Naveed Khan, Rizwan Mirza and Ashu Kumar.
