JAMMU, Oct 9: The Post Graduate Department of Home Science (Human Development), University of Jammu, today organized a painting competition for Hearing Impaired children at Secondary School for Hearing Handicapped, J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra, Shahidi Chowk.
The painting competition was organized to develop a sensitization among society towards this group of special children. Fifty students of the school participated in the painting competition and made drawings on conceptualization of their human and non human environment. Appreciation prizes were given to Vaishali Raina, Rabia Salaria, and Ruchi in the Senior Group; and to Heena, Arshad, and Roshi in the Junior Group.
Prof Rajni Dhingra, Dean, Faculty of Science, JU and Prof Neeru Sharma (HoD, Deptt of Home Science, JU) were the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively for the programme.
Along with the painting competition, an interaction was also held with the managing committee of the school, during which Prof Dhingra highlighted the need to integrate children with special needs in the mainstream of social life. She emphasized on harnessing the potential of such children, so that they don’t feel discriminated.
Prof Neeru Sharma hoped that quality of services provided to such children would improve in the coming times through collaborative efforts of the Department and the Institution.
The management committee, consisting of Mr Khajuria, Mr Sharma, Mr Verma, Mr Vaid, Mr Raina and Mr Bhan, hoped that these concerted efforts would continue.
Dr Sarika Manhas (Assistant Professor) Course Coordinator and Activity In-charge, highlighted objective of the programme and said that it was carried out to appreciate the talent among hearing impaired children. Such children are in no way inferior to others and it is time they are appreciated and accepted, she added.
Dr Shashi Manhas and Dr Samridhi Arora (Faculty members); Shivangi Gupta and Kanika Gupta (Research Scholars) of the Deptt. of Home Science and students of IIIrd Semester also attended the event and assisted in its smooth conduct.
