REASI, Sept 14: Seventeen-year-old Sheetal Devi and 39-year-old Rakesh Kumar, who won a bronze medal in the mixed team compound archery event at the Paris Paralympics 2024, were warmly welcomed in Reasi today. They were accompanied by their coaches. A large crowd, including school children, gathered to greet the medallists with flowers and garlands, while slogans of support filled the air.
Speaking to local media, Sheetal Devi expressed her happiness, stating, “I am extremely happy to see the overwhelming response and warm welcome from everyone. Winning a medal at the Paralympics is a big achievement for us and for India.” She admitted feeling nervous at first but credited her teammate, Rakesh Kumar, for helping her stay confident. “Rakesh Bhaiya gave me confidence, and together, we made it happen,” she said. Sheetal also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued encouragement of athletes. “PM Modi always motivates us whenever we win medals, and it was his belief in us that helped us succeed at the highest level.”
Rakesh Kumar shared his gratitude for the support he received, stating, “We have worked hard in archery since 2017, and this medal is the result of our dedication.” He thanked his coaches and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) for their ongoing support, which played a crucial role in their success.
