JAMMU, Oct 16: Citizens Forum (CF) has expressed serious concern over stand off between the residents and shopkeepers of Gandhi Nagar and Government authorities including JDA and ERA over proposed construction of parking lot at Gole Market, Gandhi Nagar.
In a joint statement issued here today, RK Chadha, president of the Forum, SS Wazir, former Additional Director General of Police, retd Chief Engineer Arun Sharma, retd Chief Engineer Vikram Gaur, Dr Nirmal Kamal, retd Head of Economics Department Jammu University, retd Conservator of Forests SIH Qazmi, retired Director ERA and former Vice Chairman JDA RK Handa, JS Chouhan, retd Chief Engineer Vinay Kotwal, retd AEE MS Kapoor, retd Engineer KR Gandotra, Businessman Ramesh Gupta, Businessman KK Mahajan, retd Secretary of JKBOSE Prof Mohammad Ayub and social activist Rahiat Hussain suggested that instead of converting the present green patch in the Gole Market into multi storey parking lot, underground parking lot should be created at the spot, while green patch should be developed at almost the same height, they added.
On the pattern of Palika Bazaar at Cannaught Place New Delhi, the basement of the park should be developed as a parking lot for small vehicles, to meet the problem of congestion, with vehicles parked haphazardly on the roads and lanes, they added.
They have contended that besides the green patch in the center of the Gole Market, there are also patches of vacant lands on the left and right hand of the park facing Apsara Road. These two patches should also be developed in such a way that underground parking lots are created and green parks are developed on the Main Ground, they said.
They added that due to the apathy of the concerned authorities, more and more residents in the area are being converted into commercial establishments, with the result that entire planning of the colony has been put in jeopardy.
