Partial shutdown in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct  27:  Kashmir valley today observed partial shutdown on the day Army landed in Kashmir in 1947 with authorities imposing restrictions in parts of old city area to prevent any protests.
Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in full strength across the old City areas of Srinagar to prevent any protests by separatists.
Since morning, hundreds of Police and CRPF personnel were deployed in old City areas of Rajouri Kadal, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Nawakadal, Bhori Kadal, Nawab Bazar and Safa Kadal.
Police and CRPF had closed the main roads with barbed wires and mobile bunkers were deployed at main junctions to restrict movement of the people and traffic. However, the restrictions were eased in the afternoon noon.
The day, however, passed off peacefully and there was no major violence. In Maisuma area youth pelted stones on police and CRPF leading to clashes. Police and CRPF charged batons to disperse them.
The shutdown call evoked mixed response in Kashmir. Shops were mostly closed, but some public and private transport vehicles were plying. The schools, colleges and other educational institutes were closed while banks, Government offices recorded thin attendance.
In Baramulla, a group of youth pelted stones at police and CRPF at Khanpora Bridge. However, they were chased away by the Police and CRPF. Scores of youth also held a protest demonstration in Papchan area of Bandipora district.
Authorities had put all the separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest to prevent them from organizing protests.
A police official said the situation across Kashmir remained peaceful incidents of stone-pelting at Madina Chowk and Khanpora.
