Parts of Dal Lake frozen; Leh minus 13.8 degrees C

SRINAGAR : Parts of the world famous Dal Lake were frozen partially near banks and interior area after the minimum temperature dropped further to minus 3.8 degree Celsius, lowest of this winter season so far as people continued to shiver in Leh and Kargil where the mercury remained below minus 10 degrees.
A Met department spokesman has foreast that no immediate relief for the people of the valley, where the minimum will drop further but the maximum will be near normal during the next 24 hours. There would also be no change in weather for next two days.
He said Srinagar was the coldest than world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where the night temperature was minus 0.2 degrees.
The spokesman said Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the winter so far after the mercury settled at minus 3.8 degrees, about two degree below normal this morning.
Though the frozen surface in the Dal Lake was not so hard, but shikarawalas had to put extra efforts to reach near banks.
However, in the interior areas, where sun light is not reaching because of trees, the water was frozen and children were seen throwing stones to break the frozen surface.
For the past about one week, the water has again started freezing in interior area of the water body due to minus temperature during the night.
People recalled that it was in 1965 when the Dal Lake was totally frozen and a jeep crossed on the frozen surface from one end to another.
Later in 1986 the Lake water again frozen, attracting thousands of local and foreign tourists while youths had been playing ice hockey and cricket. (AGENCIES)
