JAMMU, Nov 10: Promising all-rounder Parvez Rasool-led Jammu and Kashmir team played as a cohesive unit to clinch a magnificent victory from the jaws of defeat over Goa in the Ranji trophy group-C match at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar, today.
Old warhorse Hardeep Singh played a gem of innings of unbeaten 95 runs and the utility all-rounder Samiullah Beigh scored masterful half-century (50*) as the duo shared an unbeaten 124-run stand to take Jammu and Kashmir to 3-wicket win in their Ranji trophy opener to start the season with a positive note.
Chasing a target of 262 for victory, J&K went past the score riding on the match winning eighth-wicket partnership after they found themselves in a spot of bother with seven down for 148 on the fourth and final day of the match today.
Earlier in the day, Goa’s final batting pair of Amit Yadav (41 not out) and Gauresh Gawas (0) could add only a run to their overnight score of 245, setting a victory target of 262 runs for J&K.
Though, J&K had a disastrous start as they lost Shubam Khajuria (12), Adil Rishi (8) and Ian Dev Singh (0) for just 26 runs on the board, yet it was Skipper Parvez Rasool (39) and Majid Dar (37), who steadied the sinking ship with a 63-run valuable partnership for the fourth wicket. Parvez hit 6 superb fours in his knock in his 64-ball knock, while Majid hit 2 boundaries and 2 sixes in his 117-ball innings. But Goa spinners Shadab Jakati (2/96) and Amit Yadav (2/71) made further inroads into the J&K batting by dismissing the duo, raising hopes of their side’s first win of the season.
However, the pair of Singh and Beigh took the game away from Goa with their sensible, gritty and gutsy knocks to give the hosts full six points from their first match of the tournament.
Singh smashed nine fours in his 155-ball innings, while Beigh’s half-century came of 111 deliveries, studded with 3 fours and a six.
For Goa, besides Jakati and Yadav, pacers Harshard Gadekar (2/32) and Saurabh Bandekar (1/23) were the other successful bowlers.
Brief Scores:
Goa: 317 & 246 all out (Keenan Vaz 59, Ravikant Shukla 46; Parvez Rasool 4/65).
J&K: 302 & 262/7 (Hardeep Singh 95 not out, Samiullah Beigh 50 not out; Harshard Gadekar 2/32).
Points: Jammu & Kashmir 6, Goa 0.
