JAMMU, July 5: The lone Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine of Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, has gone out of order since yesterday as a result of which the patients are suffering.
The malfunctioning of the machine is causing trouble to the patients as they have no choice except waiting for the moment the snag in the machine is rectified or else go to private MRI centres.
The private MRI centres of the city always out to take advantage when the MRI machine of GMC&H develops some snag as many patients of GMC&H are diverted towards them. These private centres charge anything between Rs 5000 to 10 000 for MRI which is available only for Rs 2500 at GMC&H.
Meanwhile, sources said that the number of people in the waiting list for MRI tests at Medical College has reached 80.
The Head of Radiology Department, Dr Ghansham Dev Gupta, told ‘Excelsior’ that there is no fault in the machine but since the Helium level in the Machine has gone down, the work on the machine has been stopped as a precautionary measure.
He said that the Helium level in the machine has gone down to 35 % (very low level) and in this situation if we conduct tests on the machine, those will not be reliable so we have stopped conducting tests on the machine.
He said that such a situation did not arise earlier as the company which had installed the machine and also holding its maintenance contract used to provide and fill the Helium Gas in the machine on time but this time their engineers delayed this process due to some unknown reasons.
He said that we have again informed the company and their engineers will probably reach here on Thursday with the Helium gas (which is not produced in India and has to be imported from outside the Country).
Medical Superintendent, GMC&H Jammu, Dr Ramesh Gupta claimed that the machine will be put to use from Saturday, as the process of filling of gas in the MRI Machine will take 2-3 days.
