Patriarchy reigns

Sir,
At last, the four accused in the gruesome rape of the 23 year old woman have been sentenced to death. A wave of satisfaction encompassed the nation which otherwise saw judicial process nothing more than cumbersome procedure that runs on for years thereby harassing the rape victim and her family. Although we feel elated at the justice being done yet in our hearts we all know that this is in no way going to act as a deterrent. This fact is established as we are time and again stunned by the continuous and unabated rape incidents happening in the country post the delivery of judgment by the fast track court.
India has evolved as nation both technologically and economically. But on the social front our minds have worsened. Women are still treated generally as lesser beings and particularly as sex objects. Men still relish the vulger poses of ‘Sheela,’ ‘Munni’ et al and at the same time shamelessly resort to honour killings for the ‘izzat’ of the family line stops at the body of a woman in blood relation. The ‘izzat’ is not hurt when they stalk, molest and rape. The false notion of honour is of course  a by-product of patriarchy that perceives women as inferior to men. It has ‘genuine reasons to criticize, degrade and even criminalize everything feminine. Feminity means weakness, humiliation, shame, blah blah…is the patriarchal anthem. “Your past karma has landed your soul in the body of a women,” a lady one sermonised me although she was unable to answer that whether women existed in Satyug for every soul was pure then. So it is painful that this attitude is not typical of men but has been deeply embedded in women who consider it OK to be second fiddle to men and acknowledge the right of their husbands to beat them if the meal is less ‘salty’.
A woman is not a human on equal terms  with men. When she demands equality she is discouraged, rebuked, degraded, called a slut and as a last resort raped because it is her body where her universe converges. She should be ashamed of it, protect it, hide it otherwise she will face the music for she ‘asked for it.’ Choice is hers. Whether she be a ‘normal woman’ by being quiet or a ‘bitch’ by demanding equality. After all only men are human.’
Yours etc……
