PDDS celebrates World Mental Health Day

Srinagar, Oct 10: Police Drug De-addiction Services celebrated World Mental Health Day at Drug De-addiction Centre here in Police Control Room (PCR) here today.
A police spokesman said that the theme of the programme was: ‘Awareness about Mental Health Disorders associated with Substance abuse’. The participants included inpatients, their families, Medical Officers, psychologists, counsellors, social workers, post graduate students of psychology, para-medical staff members of Police Hospital and Drug De-addiction Centre.
The spokesman said the programme was started by Dr Shabir-Ur-Rehman who gave a detailed presentation on Mental Health disorders and their early identification. The participants shared their personal experiences and difficulties related to understanding of mental health issues. One of the patients and his family discussed Bipolar Affective Disorder associated with substance abuse in their patient.
The second presentation was given by Ashraf Sultan, counsellor of DDC where he highlighted addiction as a psychosocial problem and elaborated on its causes and social impacts.
At the end all the participants and professionals participated in a brainstorming session discussing role of individuals/society and law enforcing agencies in controlling substance abuse problem, he said.
It is also to be mentioned that Police Drug De- addiction Services apart from treatment facilities is actively involved in community and school mental health programmes focusing on awareness and prevention of substance abuse among young adults.
