BHADERWAH, Oct 12: Hundreds of people today held a strong protest demonstration near Takyia Chowk against the State Government’s alleged move to privatize electricity distribution for which metering and wiring work had commenced in whole Bhaderwah town.
The protest was organized under the aegis of Youth Action Committee Bhaderwah led by its president, Naseer Mehboob Padder, to mount pressure on the Government to revoke its decision of privatizing the power sector. The protesters shouted slogans against the Government accusing it of putting the assets of Jammu and Kashmir on sale to meets its “filthy interests”.
Speaking on the occasion, Naseer warned if the ‘privatization’ move wasn’t rolled back, the agitation would be intensified further. “The Government covertly decided to hand over the power sector to some private company without taking the major stakeholders into confidence. This decision will not only affect the livelihood of thousands of families but also put the State resources in danger. The tariff and power schedule will be decided by the owners of the company; besides the subsidy on power will be over while agriculture sector and small scale industries will be affected badly in case the decision is implemented,” said Naseer.
The Committee urged Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed to intervene in the matter and roll back the decision of privatization of electricity.
Meanwhile a deputation of civil society members led by Mast Nath Yogi also called upon SDM Bhaderwah, Mohd Anwar Banday, and submitted a memorandum demanding roll back of decision of ‘privatization’ of electricity distribution. SDM Bhaderwah patiently heard them and assured to forward their demand to higher ups.
