JAMMU, May 22: After finding out losses due to the last cyclonic storm through personal contacts with farmers far and wide, Chairman DSS Kissan Cell KP Singh stated that phenomenal losses have been suffered by the farmers of Jammu region due to fallout of Cyclone Tauktae.
“It is nothing less than disaster for the farmers and hence they should be compensated accordingly. Extent of damages to the standing wheat crop and seasonal fruits in Jammu region is very high as compared to previous such calamities which must be known to the Government through the media reports and farmers hue and cry. Such grievous situation has never occurred before in the recent past”, he added.
Expressing serious fears over the great losses, Singh urges upon the UT Government to spare a thought for the hapless farmers who have been hit hard by the nature’s fury many times within last two weeks in which they have lost 70 to 80 per cent of standing crops and fruits like mango, walnut, apple, orange, lemon etc.
Unless the Government compensates phenomenal losses liberally, the farmers who are seeing second wave of the pandemic at their doorsteps will be further demoralised. He appealed to the Lt Governor to take note of the crop and fruits damage and order loss assessment and pay the compensation at a fast pace.
He reiterated that Revenue authorities, Departments of Agriculture and Horticulture along with Disaster Management Teams should immediately fan out in rural areas to assess the losses.
