RAMESWARAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today dedicated to the nation “Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam National Memorial” at Pei Karumbu, the burial site of former President here, on the occasion of his second death anniversary. The Prime Minister, who came to Madurai by a special aircraft and reached this island town by a helicopter, unfurled the national flag in front of the memorial, before inaugurating it by cutting a ribbon.
Mr Modi, accompanied by Tamil Nadu Governor Dr Ch Vidyasagar Rao, former Union Minister and BJP-led NDA’s Vice-Presidential candidate M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, his Cabinet colleagues, later went round the memorial.
He also looked at the paintings and photographs displayed in the aesthetically-built memorial created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He also had a look at the model of 45-feet high Agni-II missile which weighs four-tonne set up in Dr Kalam’s memorial where the former President was laid to rest this day in 2015. Mr Modi also unveiled a statue of Bharat Ratna Dr Kalam which was in the form of the late scientist playing veena, a favourite string musical instrument played by Dr Kalam, inside the memorial. After paying floral tributes to the late missile scientist, the Prime Minister also interacted with the family members of Dr Kalam. (AGENCIES)
