3rd Under-23 Wrestling C’ship concludes

JAMMU, Aug 21: Two daylong 3rd Under-23 UT level Wrestling Championship, organized by Wrestling Association of J&K in collaboration with Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, concluded at Wrestling Hall University of Jammu, here today.
Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana was the chief guest of the closing ceremony and said the big impetus given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sports has put India on a larger canvas globally with young and talented sportspersons in almost all the disciplines making their mark and winning medals for the nation at premier events including Commonwealth Games.
“The medal tally in recent years at the International level has inspired a huge number of sportspersons, which is why Indian participation in various games is second to none”, Rana said.
Surinder Choudhary, former Legislator and senior BJP leader, Anil Sharma and office bearer of Wrestling Association including Kuldeep Kumar, Raju Sharma, Jai Bharat and Om Parkash were present along with Swaran Lal (former wrestler), Krishan Singh (Coach), Ravinder Kumar (Coach), Roshan Sharma (Assistant coach), Diler Khan, Anil Kumar and Ajay Bharti.
The selected wrestlers in the championship will take part in the forthcoming Under-23 Senior National Wrestling Championship which is scheduled to be held at Kochi from September 1 to 4.
In women 50 kg, Chada Chib, Salma Akhter and Mamta Devi secured top three medals respectively, while in 55kg, Upasana, Sonia Chib and Shallu Devi won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively and in 59kg, top two medals were won by Muskan Rajput and Kajal Chib respectively and in 76kg, Kusum Rani (Gold), Meenakshi (Silver) and Rozy Chib (Bronze).
In men 57kg, Kulvinder Singh (Gold), Mangal Singh (Silver), Keshav Singh (Bronze), while in 61kg, Natter Singh (Gold), Mohd Sameer (Silver) and Arjun Sharma (Bronze), in 65kg, Harshdev Singh (Gold), Rahul Mehra (Silver) and Saleem (Bronze), in 70kg, Jarnail Singh (Gold), Mohd Gulam Sawar (Silver) and Gaffoor Ahmed (Bronze), in 92kg, Goutam Singh (Gold), Harshdev (Silver) and Ravinder Singh (Bronze), in 97kg, Aman Kumar (Gold), Vireshwar Bhardwaj (Silver) and Kshitij Mansotra (Bronze) and in 125kg, Vikram Singh (Gold), Radhey Krishan (Silver) and Mohd Azam (Bronze).
Dushyant Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police, former international wrestler, patron and chief Wrestling Association of J&K gave an overview about the wrestling competition.
“There is no looking back for our young achievers, as sky is the limit for their talent, which they have shown by putting in their best to the sport or activity they have chosen for themselves”, Rana said while wishing all the best to participants in the championship. He lauded growing enthusiasm about wrestling among youth, saying the presence of eminent wrestlers will prove as a source of inspiration for them in years to come. “I hope they will learn from the veterans in the field”, he said and exhorted youth to participate in sports in a big way alongside academics.
