Srinagar June 19: Police today detained several workers and leaders of Apni Party who attempted to lead a protest rally towards Lal Chowk to show their displeasure with the administration for failing to provide basic necessities to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The protesting leaders and workers assembled at the party headquarters at M-2 Church Lane in Srinagar and raised slogans condemning the government’s inability to meet the basic demands of the people, such as the availability of ration, uninterrupted power supply, and sufficient potable water. However, as the protestors tried to take the rally towards Lalchowk, the police locked the gate of the party headquarters to prevent them from leaving the premises. Several leaders were detained during the process.
Undeterred by the obstruction, the protestors continued their protest inside the office premises, expressing their discontent and denouncing the administration’s failure. They called for immediate action to address the shortage of essential commodities that has greatly affected the lives of the people in Jammu and Kashmir.
The party’s provincial president, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, spoke to reporters during the demonstration. He highlighted the party’s consistent demands for adequate basic amenities and facilities for the people, emphasizing that these demands have been continuously ignored by the authorities. “Today, we had decided to stage a strong protest by organizing a procession on the roads, but authorities did not allow us to proceed. While engaging in peaceful protest with legitimate demands is a democratic and constitutional right for every citizen, unfortunately, the authorities have prevented us from exercising that right,” he said.
He further said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are currently enduring numerous hardships due to the unavailability of ration, frequent power outages, inadequate water supply to several areas, and various other deficiencies. “These issues have significantly impacted the lives of people and caused difficulties and inconveniences for them,” he said.
He urged the LG administration to take the necessary measures to ensure a sufficient power supply to the people, including domestic consumers, traders, and the industry.
