SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Police today foiled Panchayat members’ proposed march to the Legislative Assembly to press for the implementation of 73rd Amendment of Indian Constitution in the State.
About 300 Panchayat members of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference had assembled near the Exhibition Ground to march toward the Assembly complex.
As soon as they tried to march towards Assembly, a large number of cops deployed in the area swung into action and took them into “preventive custody”. They were shifted to Shaheed Gunj and Shergarhi police stations.
The members have threatened the State Government of “dire consequences” if the Central Panchayati Raj System was not extended to the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
“We will continue our struggle till our genuine demands are met. If Government failed to deliver our rights to us we will start a strong agitation against it to teach present Government a lesson,” said Aftaab Ahmed Beig, senior leader of AJKPC.
Among the detained were Imtiaz Afzal Beig, Bashir Ahmed Malik, Aftaab Ahmed Beig, Nazir Ahmed Laroo, Bashir Ahmed Rather, Ghulam Hassan Rather, Ghulam Mohiuddin and Abdul Ahad Chatt.
