SRINAGAR, May 16: Jammu and Kashmir Police is organizing Police Martyrs Memorial Football Tournament in summer capital in the month of June. Reputed footballs clubs within and outside the State are participating in the three weeks long tournament.
This was informed in a meeting convened to discuss arrangements for the prestigious tournament, under the chairmanship of Additional Director General of Police, Armed/Law & Order (ADGP), K Rajendra Kumar at Armed Police Headquarters, here today.
Besides police officers, the meeting was attended by members of J & K Football Association, Zameer Thakur, S A Hamid, Prof Bashir and F A Sofi.
Addressing the meeting, Rajendra said that the tournament is an annual event being organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police to commemorate police martyrs who made supreme sacrifices of their lives to safeguard the people of the State and their property.
He said that such events are also proving beneficial in promoting sports culture in the State. “Top football teams within and outside the State are participating in the tournament and the talented footballers of the State have performed well in the previous tournaments,” said Rajendra.
The ADGP added that the tournament would start in the third week of June, 2012 and will conclude in July, 2012. He stressed upon the organizers for greater coordination with sports bodies including State Sports Control Board to conduct the event successfully. He also emphasised for large participation of teams so that football lovers get an opportunity to witness the competition among famous teams of the Country.
On the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Rajendra also said that JKP would conduct Football Promotion Camps for the youth in far-flung areas of the State during the summer this year. He said the aim is to provide an opportunity to the footballers to come forward and excel their talent in the game which has large potential in the State.
