Police thrashes mediamen

Baramulla, May 5: Scores of photo journalists were ruthlessly beaten by police in Sopore today afternoon when they were covering post Friday protests in the town.
“There were clashes between youth and forces in Sopore town on Friday afternoon, after which photo journalists reached there to cover the protests that irritated the men in uniform including  SHO Sopore, Mudasir Geelani”, an eyewitness said.
He said that, media men produced their identity cards before the police officer and his men in uniform, but without listening any word from scores of journalists, they abused and thrashed mercilessly, these photo journalists without no fault of theirs.
Meanwhile, media men from Baramulla and Sopore staged a peaceful protest and took placards in their hands from DC office to DIG office Baramulla.
They gave a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Dr Nasir Naqash demanding that strong action should be taken against the police officer who thrashed photo journalists in Sopore town today, otherwise they will hit the streets tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Kashmir Press Photographers Association also convened an emergency meeting to discuss the assault on journalists by the force personnel in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.
The meeting strongly condemned the assault on the journalists by the force personnel.
The Association demanded that action should be taken against the force personnel involved in beating the journalists.
