Agartala, Oct 12:
Poor condition of roads in Tripura has prompted India’s lone Olympian Dipa Karmakar to return her BMW car presented by Hyderabad District Badminton Association.
Though Dipa did not want to disclose the decision in public, her father Dulal Karmakar stated that the premier BMW car would not be useful in Tripura because of bad road condition and inadequate maintenance scope in Northeast.
“There is no BMW service centre in Tripura. If the car develops any technical snag, how would we manage the repairing? There are no roads in Agartala and Tripura to ply such luxury car. Better to return before it gets damaged,” Karmakar said.
He also said Dipa’s Coach Bisheshwar Nandi in consultation with Dipa had discussed these matters with V Chamundeshwarnath of Hyderabad Badminton Association a week ago and he agreed to deposit the money equal to a BMW car cost to her bank account.
“Dipa is shy to discuss the matter in public and made it clear that she would be happy whatever amount they give in return of the car,” Karmakar said adding that the issue was decided collectively by her coach, parents and other family members. (PTI)
