It is an enigma why the number of voters has suddenly decreased in some constituencies in Jammu region while in other constituencies in the State it has increased. The number of voters in some constituencies has increased above 40 per cent as of today in comparison to the year 2002. Jammu East and Jammu West as well as Gandhinagar constituencies have shown decrease in the number of electorate when compared to numbers registered in 2002. If logical is to be employed the number should have increased because many under aged youth have added six more years to their age since 2002. But surprisingly their number remains less. In most of the constituencies in Kashmir valley the increase in the number of voters has gone up by 20 per cent or even more. Two reasons can be assigned. One is that either the statistics of 2002 census are wrong or that owing to unemployment on a large scale people have migrated from their homes and gone to other places in search of livelihood. If we accept that there has been an overall increase in the population of the State, then there should be no reason why some of constituencies should face decrease in the number of voters. This is a serious matter and the Election Commissioner should focus attention on it and find out why this imbalance has happened. From nearly 61 lakh voters in previous elections the number now casting vote will go up to about 68 lakh which is understandable. But why decrease in so many constituencies has to be explained.
