JAMMU, Apr 9: J&K Porters Union today staged a protest demonstration demanding absorption in Government jobs.
Romesh Kumar, Union president told reporters that many youth from Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Himachal Pradesh and Pathankote were recruited by the army as porters and they served well in Kargil war where 10 of them were killed while performing duties.
“The family members of those killed were given financial help and also a Government job,” he said adding that the remaining porters were assured Government jobs too after the Kargil war was over.
Kumar further said that those assured jobs were never given to the porters and they are till date moving from pillar to post for that.
However, he expressed dismay that surrendered terrorists are being given government jobs but the porters who worked to assist the defence forces in Kargil war are left at the mercy of God.
The protesters appealed to the authorities concerned to look into their issue and give them jobs as they have families to support.
