Posoco likely to soon become an independent regulator

NEW DELHI, May 31: The Government is likely to soon finalise a new organisational structure to make Posoco, that manages electricity grids, an independent regulator.
The move is part of serious efforts to ensure strict discipline and adherence to rules in utilisation of power grids, in the wake of massive failure of grids last year that had affected more than half of country’s total population.
“We are working on having an independent organisational structure for Posoco. In this regard, discussions are going on with the Department of Public Enterprises,” a senior Power Ministry official said.
The official said that the new structure is expected to be finalised soon.
At present, Posoco (Power Operation System Co) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run transmission utility Power Grid Corp.
In February, Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had said the Ministry would make Posoco an independent regulator.
Overdrawal of electricity beyond the allocated quota was blamed as a major factor for the collapse of power grids last July.
Posoco has the mandate to ensure “integrated operation of regional and national power systems” through National Load Despatch Centre and Regional Load Despatch Centres.
Besides spinning off Posoco as an independent watchdog, the Ministry has initiated a raft of measures including third party protection audits of sub-stations to ensure healthy functioning of the grids system.
Steps such as frequency based automatic load shedding schemes and system protection schemes, are also in place to prevent grid disturbances in the future. (PTI)
