POWERGRID Inter-Regional Cricket tourney commences

JAMMU, Dec 14: The five-day POWERGRID Inter-Regional Cricket Tournament 2024 kicked off today at MA Stadium, Jammu. The tournament, which runs from December 14 to 18, played on a league-cum-knockout basis at three venues: MA Stadium, University of Jammu Cricket Ground, and Jammu Sports Club, Tawa, Kot-Bhalwal, Jammu.
The participating teams are Eastern Region-I (ER-I), Eastern Region-II (ER-II), Northern Region-I (NR-I) , Northern Region-III (NR-III), Southern Region-I (SR-I), Southern Region-II (SR-II), Western Region-I (WR-I), Western Region-II (WR-II), North Eastern Region (NER), Corporate Centre (CC), and hosts Northern Region-II (NR-II).
The event was inaugurated by Tarun Bajaj, Executive Director of POWERGRID Northern Region-II, in the presence of senior officials, including Arindham Chakraborty, CGM (Projects), NR-II, and Shafat Ahmed Wani, Senior GM (AM). The opening ceremony featured a memorable march past with a performance by the Army band, adding a grand touch to the event.
In his address, Tarun Bajaj encouraged the players to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and highlighted how such events foster teamwork and cooperation among POWERGRID employees. He emphasized that these tournaments strengthen bonds between regions while promoting mental and physical fitness. “This annual event brings employees from different regions together to promote sportsmanship and fitness,” he said.
In today’s cricket matches, NR-II defeated WR-II by 5 wickets at University Grounds, chasing down WR-II’s total of 100 all out with 101/5 in 12.3 overs. Vinod Atri of NR-II was named the Man of the Match. At the same venue, ER-II won by 24 runs against ER-I, posting 130/3 in 15 overs, while ER-I managed 106/6 in 15 overs. Sunil Chetri of ER-II earned the Man of the Match.
At MA Stadium, NR-I triumphed over SR-I by 130 runs, setting a target of 190/8 in 20 overs, while SR-I was bowled out for 60 runs in 14.2 overs. Bhavesh of NR-I was named the Man of the Match. In the second match, CC defeated WR-I by 78 runs, scoring 176/6 in 20 overs, and WR-I was all out for 98 runs in 19.2 overs. Sandeep Panwar of CC won the Man of the Match award.
At Jammu Sports Club, SR-II defeated NR-III by 27 runs, scoring 112/9 in 20 overs, while NR-III was all out for 85 runs in 16.3 overs. Ashutosh Shrivastava of SR-II was named the Man of the Match
