JAMMU, Apr 27: Director General of Police (DGP), Ashok Prasad flagged off the State Level Marathon from Police Sports Stadium, Gulshan ground, here today.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Prasad said that role of sports in physical and mental development of the youth is of great importance, adding that it creates discipline and comradeship among the youth and sports lovers which in large helps a nation to prosper in all spheres of life.
He said that the JKP has organized various sports events in the winter capital of the State under its Civic Action Programme and the people, particularly the youth have shown great interest in these events, adding the aim behind organizing sports events is to cultivate sports talent among the youth.
He appreciated the ADGP Armed and his team for organizing the event in a befitting manner.
Thousands of men, women and children from 5 to 85 years participated in the Marathon, organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police under its Civic Action Programme.
The Marathon culminated at the starting venue after passing through various routes in the city. People profusely cheered the participants when they passed through the route of the Marathon.
The flagging-off ceremony started at 5:45 am.
Over 5,000 participants, including students from different educational institutions, sports bodies, police personnel, para-military personnel, young children, members of chamber of Commerce, Jammu Club, Press Club and senior citizens.
On the culmination of the Run, winners from all categories were awarded cash prizes and certificate of participation by the DGP, who was the chief guest at the prize distribution function.
Earlier, Mr Sahai, organizing secretary, spoke about the aims and objectives of the event.
Among others, the flag off ceremony and prize distribution function was attended by Special DGP, K Rajendra Kumar, ADGP, Headquarters, S P Vaid, IGP, Jammu Zone, Rajesh Kumar, IGP Armed, Jammu, P R Manhas, DIG, Jammu Range, Shakeel Ahmad Beig, DIG IRP, Jammu, Vijay Singh Sambyal, SSP Jammu, Atul Goel, Commandants of IRP and Armed Battalions, other senior Police officers and prominent citizens.
The participants were presented T-shirts sponsored by 17 Miles Restaurant, Toyota Jammu and Pahalwan Gandhi Nagar.
In 6 km Under-14 girls, Tulsi Pandey (1st Rs 8000), Damni Sharma (Rs 6000), Sidhaka Charak (Rs 5000), Shama Begum (Rs 4000), Somya Sharma (Rs 3000), Mahi Sharma (Rs 2000), Dimple Goutam (Rs 1500), Sonalia Shivgotra (Rs 1200), Nowsheen Qadri (Rs 800) and Ipshita Sahani (Rs 500).
In 8 km Under-14 boys, Md Saleem budgam claimed first position, Manan Hassan of Baramulla bagged second, Zubair Ahmed of Srinagar (3rd), Umer Farooq of Srinagar (4th), Amir Suhai of Budgam (5th), Puneet Kumar of Jammu (6th), Robin Sharma of Jammu (7th), Mohd Abid of Jammu (8th), Deepak Kumar of Jammu (9th) and Nikhil of Jammu (10th). All the winners received cash prize similar to the winners of 6 km Under-14 girls event.
In 42 km Marathon, Tanveer Hussain (Srinagar Rs 30,000), Sanjeev Kumar (Jammu Rs 20,000), Mazafer Maqbool (Srinagar 15,000), Dilip Sharma (Rs 10,000) and Anil Singh (Rs 5,000).
Full Marathon 42 km Police/ Army CPOs: Riyaz (Rs 8000), Naresh (Rs 6000), Lovjeet Singh (Rs 5000), Mehraj (Rs 4000) and Ram Raj (Rs 3000)
Half-Marathon 21 km men: Balvinder Singh (Jammu Rs 20,000), Hamid Aziz (Srinagar 15,000), Ajay Sharma (Jammu Rs 10,000), Nisar Ahmed (Ganderbal Rs 7500) and Dinesh Kumar (Jammu Rs 5,000).
Half-Marathon 21 km Police/Army CPOs: Zaffar Ali (5,000), Imtiyaz (4,000), Lal Singh (3,000), Dilawar Singh (2,000) and Vikram Singh (1,000).
Half-Marathon 21 km women: Mandeep Kour (Jammu 20,000), Insha Wadoo (Srinagar Rs 15,000), Anjali Choudhary (Samba 10,000), Jaspreet Kour (Jammu 7,500) and Poonam Bilkoria (5,000).
