Prompt delivery of relief

Chairing a meeting of senior executives called to take stock of distribution of aid to the flood sufferers, the Chief Minister issued instructions to the Divisional Commissioners and Secretaries of various departments to step up distribution of relief to flood victims on a war footing. A comprehensive package for meeting enormous losses suffered by the State is about to be forwarded to the Central Government after the State Cabinet gives clearance to it. However as that will takes its time, the State administration would not keep the flood sufferers in a state of limbo. As such the Chief Minister has ordered that whatever relief is available for distribution under State Disaster Relief Fund has to be distributed among the deserving families. One week’s time has been given to the administration to complete this task. Foremost among the sufferers are those who are living in tents and it is reported that 168 families are living in tents on the roadside. They have to be housed most urgently and provided with such basic necessities as would help them fight the impending winter. Before sever winter sets in, people should be provided with shelter and basic necessities.
Permanent rehabilitation of the affected people and long term prevention of recurrence of floods in future form the substance of the master package which the State Government will be forwarding to the Centre. Once that is approved, initiative will be taken simultaneously to rehabilitate the affected people. We would like to emphasize upon the Union Government and especially the Ministry of Home Affairs that by the end of October, autumn and the early winter will be round the corner. Each day will mean much for the suffering people. Those who need assistance to repair their houses should get it immediately so that before the snowfall they have the shelter. In case some families are unable to rebuild their damaged houses before the onset of the winter, alternative arrangement of housing them in nearby localities either by renting houses or providing them alternative accommodation has to  be considered, It will be very unfortunate if any family is exposed to hash winter and suffers casualties. That should not happen. At the same time the Government has to ensure that only genuine sufferers are provided assistance and relief because it is just possible charlatans would like to exploit the situation and make fake claims.
