Protest at Mishriwala over alleged sacrilegious act

JAMMU, July 27: A protest broke out this morning at Mishriwala on Jammu-Poonch National Highway over an alleged sacrilegious act near a temple at Mishriwala Chowk.
Hundreds of residents of Mishriwala and nearby villages assembled at Mishriwala Chowk at about 8 am and raised slogans demanding arrest of the culprits of the alleged sacrilegious act.
The agitators alleged a sacrilegious act by some unidentified miscreants near the temple. They were demanding arrest of the culprits asserting that an attempt was made to disturb the communal harmony and peace in the region.
As soon as the news of alleged sacrilegious act spread in the vicinity, more and more people started joining the protest and later the agitating protesters blocked the Jammu-Poonch National Highway at Mishriwala and disrupted vehicular traffic for about one hour.
On getting information of the alleged sacrilegious act and resultant protest, a police team from police station Kanachak led by SHO Kanachak, Rajesh Sharma, reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesting people but all in vain.
The protesting people were demanding surveillance of police in the area, installation of CCTV cameras in the vicinity, laying more nakas in the area and opening of a ‘Gowshalla’ in the area.
Later, senior officers of police and civil administration including Additional DC, Jammu, Arun Manhas and SP Rural, Arun Gupta, reached the spot and pacified the protesting people by assuring that their demands will be looked into. On their assurance, the agitating people lifted the blockade and dispersed.
When contacted, Additional DC Jammu, Arun Manhas, said that a case FIR No 99/2016 in this connection has been registered under relevant sections at police station Kanachak against unidentified persons and the police have been directed to increase surveillance in the area.
