Srinagar, Nov 8: Police today fired tear smoke shells to quell protests that broke out in Nowgam area of Srinagar against killing of two youth in Army firing early this week.
Police and para-military Central Reserve Force (CRPF) was heavily deployed in the area as a pre-cautionary measure. Protesters blocked the National High Bypass and pelted stones at the Police and CRPF leading to ding dong battles that continued throughout the day.
Large number of passengers travelling to airport missed the flights even as the airlines delayed fights to accommodate these passengers.
The protests broke out a day after Army admitted its mistake and assured appropriate action against anyone found guilty.
Reports said that groups of angry protesters took to streets and blocked the main road connecting the city with Bypass at several places between Naikbagh and Nowgam Chowk, forcing suspension of the public and private transport.
Two local youths were killed and as many injured when Army troops opened fire on them while they were travelling in a car at Chattergam in Budgam district on Monday.
Army yesterday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed and Rs five lakh each to the injured. The families, however, rejected the Army compensation.
