Protesters facilitate fleeing of militants

SRINAGAR, Apr 28: Hundreds of people this evening resorted to stone-pelting to facilitate fleeing of a militant from cordon in North Kashmir’s Kupwara village.
Army’s 28 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Police and CRPF cordoned off Pir Mohalla area of Kantpora in Lolab in the North Kashmir district of Kupwara following a tip off about presence of militants. As the joint team of security forces intensified the combing operations, the militants believed to be hiding in the Pir Mohalla near the Jamia Masjid tried to break the cordon. The security forces engaged them in a gunfight which continued for nearly an hour.
However, hundreds of residents of Kantpora and its adjoining localities came out of their houses and protested. The protesters started march towards encounter site and resorted to stone-pelting on security forces in order to facilitate feeling of trapped militants.
Police and CRPF retaliated by firing teargas shells to quell the protests. Due to clashes, the operation against militants got disrupted and later the security forces called off the operation. The clashes between the two sides continued till late hours.
In the meantime, militants this afternoon hurled a grenade towards Police Post Sherbagh in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. No loss of life or injury has been reported during the blast. However, some vehicles suffered damage. The explosion also created panic with pedestrians and shopkeepers rushed towards safer places.
