Protests, shutdown in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: Soon after the rumours were spread over the hearing of Article 35-A, chaos was witnessed in Lal Chowk and other areas of Kashmir after groups of people came out on the streets to protest against any attempt to tinker with the Article.
Clashes erupted in Maisuma area of Lal Chowk after the rumors were spread that the hearing of Article 35-A was today in Supreme Court. The shopkeepers closed down their shops in various areas of Srinagar. However, police urged the people not to pay heed to the rumors, saying that the main hearing of the issue is listed for August 31.
“Confusion has been created about listing of the Article 35-A case in the Supreme Court for today. In this regard, let me clarify that it is a fresh case filed with regard to Article 35A which has been listed at S. No 10 before Chief Justice. This has nothing to do with the original case pending in SC which may be listed for 31st though the exact date would be made public on Tuesday. Probably this new case may also be clubbed with the petition filed by RSS backed NGO ‘We The Citizens’,” police said.
Clashes also erupted in South Kashmir’s Shopian and Anantnag districts and also in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla. Scores of youth sustained injuries during the clashes.
A spontaneous shutdown was observed at various places in North, South and Central Kashmir areas throughout the day.
