SRINAGAR, Feb 15: Residents of New Colony in Srinagar’s Batamalloo area have complained that the public park in their neighborhood has been transformed into a garbage dump and a haven for anti-social activities.
The residents alleged that the condition of the park deteriorated after it was handed over to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation from the department of Floriculture, Gardens, and Parks. “When it was maintained by a group of FG&P department gardeners, the park was always bustling with morning and evening walkers-women, men, and children,” the residents said, adding that students from the adjacent Government school would also throng the park during recess and sports breaks.
Residents said that a significant number of people were often seen relaxing in the park, including those who were visiting the nearby hospital for treatment from all over the valley. “The park has degraded into a garbage dump, with wild grass growing everywhere and antisocial elements visible,” residents said.
The locals said that no gardener from the SMC comes to maintain the parks. “We request that the park maintenance be handed over to FG&P gardeners from SMC before the start of the New Season,” the residents added.
