Railways to introduce AC coaches in DEMU trains

New Delhi : Railways will introduce AC coaches in DEMU trains to enhance comfort during urban and suburban journeys.
Railways has developed air-conditioned coaches for DEMU (diesel electric multiple unit) trains which generally ply on short-distance urban, semi-urban and rural routes.
Till now, DEMU trains consisted only of non-air conditioned coaches. Soon, DEMU trains with AC coaches will be rolled out for passenger services, says a government release.
An eight-coach DEMU train will have two AC coaches which are manufactured at Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).
ICF plans to roll out four DEMU train sets each with two AC coaches. Further manufacture of these coaches will be based on the feedback from users.
The AC coaches are provided with five comfortable reclining cushioned chairs arranged in each row with a total seating capacity for 73 passengers.
The interior furnishing of these AC coaches is similar to that of intercity AC express train coaches. All AC coaches are equipped with environment friendly bio-toilets.
Railways, at present, runs three types of DEMU trains — six-coach train with 700 HP engine, eight-coach train with 1,400 HP and 10-coach train with 1,600 HP engine. (AGENCIES)
