JAMMU, Aug 7: Like other parts of the country the festival of Raksha Bandhan signifying the tying of sacred threads (Rakhis) by sisters on the wrists of their brothers was celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety across the Jammu region today.
The sisters were seen coming to their parental house during the day to tie Rakhis on the wrists of their brothers and praying for their longevity and prosperity. In turn the brothers reaffirm their bond of love and respect to their sisters.
The day long festivities continued and there was a huge rush in the bazaars every where with ladies and girls purchasing Rakhis of different colours and design to tie on the wrists of their brothers.
The festival also marks the kite flying and children as well as youth during the day were seen flying colorful kites in every nook and corner of the city in the sky. The people were seen flying kites on the roof tops of their houses up to late night also.
A large number of people in groups visited Ved Mandir, Ambphalla here and other homes to tie Rakhis to the children there and offer fruit and sweets to them.
The members of New Young Blood Organization led by Ashok Verma and Dr Thappa also visited Ved Mandir and celebrated the Raksha Bandhan with the children there. They also offered fruit and sweets to the children on the occasion.
The district administration of Samba visited various families of Gurha Slathia Vijaypur having no girls and celebrated Raksha Bandhan with them. The team of the officials was led by the Deputy Commissi-oner, Sheetal Nanda and comprised of SDM, Vijaypur, Ravinder Sharma, CMO Samba

CMO Rita Kotwal, CDPO Sandeep Gupta, tehsildar Vijaypur, BMO Ramgarh and other senior officials.
On the occasion the girls of nearby areas also accompanied DC to celebrate the Raksha Bandhan, tying the sacred thread on the wrists of boys having no sisters. DC said today’s campaign was to highlight the importance of a girl child in a family.
