GUWAHATI, Dec 4:
Extraordinary team effort by the young brigade of Jammu and Kashmir helped them to inflict a humiliating defeat on formidable side of Assam by a huge margin of 235 runs in the Ranji Trophy Group-C match at Nehru Stadium, here today.
Earlier, resuming from an over-night score of 46/3, Assam batsmen Dheeraj Jadhav and Gokul Sharma began the day cautiously and scored 23 runs between them before speedster Ramdayal Punia trapped the later LBW on a beautiful in-swinger at his individual score of 10 runs and the team’s total of 69 runs in 32.3 overs. Stylish middle-order batsman Dheeraj Jadhav continued his sublime touch alongwith number 6 Tajinder Singh and took the score to 124 runs in 50 overs, before debutant left-arm spinner Wasim Raza did the trick, dismissing dangerous looking Jadav on a delivery that brushed his bat and pad and went towards close-in fielder Hardeep Singh, who took a brilliant catch. Jadhav scored 51 runs off 135 balls with the help of 8 boundaries. Tajinder Singh was joined by Syed Mohammed added 22 more runs to the score before off-spinner Parvez Rasool, who had a 7-wicket haul in the first innings, dismissed him at his individual score of 14 runs and the team’s total of 146/6 in 60 overs. Tajinder Singh continued his brilliance and slammed a brilliant century (105) and guided the lower-order batsmen to consume time. He was trapped by Bandeep Singh to be the last man out at the team’s total of 241 runs, before Parvez Rasool, Manik Gupta and Wasim Raza claimed the wickets of Abu Nechim (07), Pritam Das (00) and Arup Das (19) to help J&K win by a big margin of 235 runs. For J&K, Ramdayal was the pick of the bowlers, who bowled 16 overs and conceded 53 runs to claim 3 important wickets this placid track, simply a grave yard for pacers. Wasim Raza and Parvez Rasool bagged 2 wickets each, while skipper Ian Dev Singh, Manik Gupta and Bandeep Singh claimed one wicket each. Parvez Rasool was adjudged man of the match for his superb all-round performance by a a panel of two umpires K Srinath and Ananthapadhanamhan and the match referee Harvinder Singh Sodhi.
J&K got 6 points from this win and their points tally reached to 7 with four matches still to go, while, the table-toppers Assam, despite getting no point from this match, have 16 points in their kitty. This win will go a long way in serving J&K to create a niche at the bigger circuit of the game.
J&K will lock horns with Kerala in the next match beginning from December 8, 2012.
