Umar made these remarks while inaugurating a new business venture in the Gojwara area of the old city of Srinagar. Referring to the recently held meeting of the Hurriyat Conference-the first in the last five years-he noted that although many members met after nearly five years, several others remain behind bars.
Mirwaiz outlined two aspects of the Kashmir issue: the first pertains to local civic concerns such as roads, drinking water and electricity. “The second dimension of Kashmir is related to the political problem, which we have been repeatedly stating requires a peaceful resolution,” he said.
Recalling his recent statement made from the pulpit of Jamia Masjid during last Friday’s prayers, he said, “We have been repeatedly saying that issues can only be resolved through talks.”
Umar indicated that the Hurriyat Conference is slowly regrouping and rethinking how to advance this process and initiate steps that will ensure a lasting solution to the issue.
Regarding the opening of many new business ventures, he expressed satisfaction. “It is good that different ventures are being opened across Kashmir. The youth in downtown areas are also establishing new enterprises, generating employment opportunities while developing credible businesses. I am pleased to see such brands emerging here and that the youth are seizing these opportunities,” he said.
He noted that while there has been much focus on horticulture and tourism, it is important to diversify businesses and expand into more sectors. “The important thing is for the youth to exhibit honesty and dedication in running their businesses,” he said.
