Not remaining stuck with the indispensability of only a few names given to most of our national assets, the Government of India’s resolve to name various AIIMS and other institutions across the country, after prominent local heroes, freedom fighters, historical events or monuments of the area is a great step to break the legitimised monopoly in naming these assets after a few names only. It is a travesty and a tragedy on the other hand, that numerous important places, towns, institutions, railway stations and monuments in the country are named and still known after many tyrant invaders of other countries which apart from looking at from narrow political angles is nothing short of an onslaught on the collective conscience , culture , traditions and historical glory of this country. It is again a travesty that all these 70 years such a monopolistic but pro- invader approach has been pervading the system where-under, old and basic original names got evaporated in oblivion.
In this connection, 23 AIIMS across the country being decided to be rechristened giving them specific and befitting names all related to local heroes of prominence, freedom fighters and important historical achievements and events is all noteworthy. These heroes by remembering in this way, may come out of the state of being treated as unsung and forgotten ones. Such a decision surely deserves to be hailed.
