Rohtang pass opens after completion of snow clearance work

SHIMLA, May 16: Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has cleared the snow from gateway to Lahaul Spiti 13050 ft high Rohtang Pass on Manali-Leh national highway last evening senior officer of BRO were present on this occasion.  Snow was cleared after nearly six months the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti has been connected by road after completion of snowclearance operation from Rohtang Pass.
Despite having better now clearing machines it was herculean task for the BRO as most part of the road was covered with 35 to 40 feet of high snow wall while at Rohtang Pass this wall was nearly 60 feet high.
In the freezing cold conditions the Border Roads Organisation men with their high morale used snow cutter and other latest machinery to cut this snow wall.  BRO had begun clearing the snow in mid April.
BRO commander Col. AP Rajender and other officers were present on this occasion. However road was yet to officially throw open after mending certain sliding and slippery points but BRO completed this mission in target time today.
BRO had open this road for traffic last year on May 7 just a month in advance, keeping lok Sabha election in mind. Manali-Keylong road would be facilitated with this operation which would further help the Manali Leh road to be open soon. This road was closed by administration for vehicular traffic on November 15, 2015 after snowfall. (UNI)
