JAMMU, Mar 14: Appreciating the Jammu and Kashmir Police for playing an important role in promoting sports and honing talent of sports persons of the State, the Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh said that the role of Jammu and Kashmir Police in sports has remained much encouraging at national and international level, helping in a great way to inspire the youth towards such activities.
The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at a valedictory function of the finals of 4th All India Police Martyrs Memorial Hockey Tournament at K.K. Hakhu Stadium here today.
The final match was played between Punjab & Sindh Bank and Punjab Police which was won by Punjab & Sindh Bank by three goals to two (3-2) in a close contest. The players of both the teams displayed splendid hockey skills and made valiant efforts in converting half chances into chances.
Minister of State for Transport, Abdul Gani Kohli and MLA Mahore, Mumtaz Khan were also present on the occasion.
Mr Singh said that such events are of paramount importance for promotion of sports culture in the State and JKP has shown great interest in sports arena, besides professional duties.
The Deputy Chief Minister while appreciating the part played by JKP in preserving the sovereignty and integrity of the nation said that it has always been on forefront to safeguard the life and property of the people and they have made supreme sacrifices for restoration of peace and prosperity in the State.
“The Government would be very liberal in providing support to JKP in terms of infrastructural development and other requirements for augmenting sports and its infrastructure”, he said.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar deliberated on the objectives of organizing the national level event and said that the championship is aimed to remember the sacrifices of police martyrs, who laid down their precious lives for a noble cause of nation’s service. He said that JKP has a long history of public service and sacrifices. “Our Jawans and officers made supreme sacrifices for peace and stability in the State and the Organization will never forget its martyrs”, he said.
The DGP informed that JKP, besides its professional duty has been focussing on various sports activities within and outside the Organization and the activities have been providing opportunity to sports lovers to witness national events in the State.
The Deputy Chief Minister also distributed mementos, medals and cash prizes among the participating teams, referees, sports managers and other sports persons.
Inaugural match of the Tournament was played between Air Force and CRPF which was won by Air Force by 2-1 goals.
Among others, the function was attended by ADsGP, S P Vaid, S M Sahai, DG Youth Services and Sports, Navin Agarwal, IsGP, AK Choudhary, HK Lohia, Deepak Kumar, SJM Geelani, MS Salaria, Yoginder Koul, MA Khan, Rajesh Kumar, Mukesh Singh, Shyam Lal, SA Watali, MA Ganai, JP Singh, DIsG, Shakeel Ahmed Beig and Johnny William.
