JAMMU, Mar 7: Rouvin Koul, a 6th grade student of KC Public School, is the only student of Indian Classical vocal music from the State of Jammu and Kashmir to qualify for the award of Cultural Talent Scholarship 2017-18 for Hindustani Music (Vocal).
It is a Special Drive launched by the Centre for Cultural Resources & Training, Ministry of Culture, New Delhi.
He appeared for an interview for the Scholarship arranged by the Regional Selection Committee of CCRT at Sehgal Hall of the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in October last year.
The selection process consisted of vocal performance of Indian classical music and verbal communication. The results were declared recently by the CCRT.
Rouvin has been undertaking rigorous training in vocal Indian classical music under the tutelage of the famed Guru Shri TK Jalali, former Principal of the College of Music and Fine Arts, Srinagar & Jammu. The renowned exponent of Indian Classical Music describes his young disciple as a ‘child prodigy’ and foresees a great future for him as a torch-bearer of the rich Indian classic music tradition which faces the threat of extinction in view of onslaught of pop music into the sensibilities of the contemporary youth of India.
