Sanjay Dutt back behind bars as his furlough ends

PUNE :  Convicted Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt today returned behind bars at Yerawada Jail here after his four-weeks leave of furlough, which he spent with his family in Mumbai, ended.

Dutt, 53, is serving the remaining 42-month term of his five-year jail sentence for possessing illegal firearms, part of the cache of weapons which were meant to be used during the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai.

Dutt was released from jail on furlough for 14 days on October 1. Later, he sought an extension of additional 14 days on medical grounds which was granted to him by the jail authorities.

It is learnt that the actor had to undergo treatment of blood clots formed in his legs due to some ailment.

Dutt left his house in Mumbai’s Bandra area at around 6.30 AM with wife Maanyata and came back to the jail at around 10.30 AM while travelling by road from the metropolis to Pune.

The ‘Munnabhai’ of the celluloid will be spending Diwali in the confines of the prison, where he is reportedly given work of making eco-friendly bags.

While leaving his home in Mumbai, Dutt said that he still has pain in his legs and appealed to fans to pray for his early release.

He also thanked the media for accepting his request to allow him privacy with his family during his parole period.

“I still have a problem in my legs but it is a bit better than before. Pray for me so that I can come out soon. Happy Diwali to all,” he said.

Dutt had surrendered before a special TADA court in Mumbai in May this year and was later shifted to Yerawada jail to serve the remainder of his term. (AGENCIES)
