Sarpanches misuse power, overcharge for solar lights

Srinagar, July 10:
In one of the blatant misuse of power by the Sarpanches in North Kashmir’s border area of Uri, the members of Gujjar and Bakerwal community have been over charged for subsidized Solar lights.
The Department of Science and Technology under Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JKEDA) is distributing around 15000 solar Home Lights and Lanterns among the Gujjar and Bakarwal community across Jammu and Kashmir.
Under the project 300 solar Home Lights and Lanterns were distributed in Jabla village and 500 in Garkote village of Uri in Baramulla district.
The solar lanterns are distributed at the subsidized cost of Rs 500 and Solar Home Lights at the cost of Rs 750 by the Government. But the Sarpanches of the two villages have charged Rs 1600 for solar lantern and Rs 2200 for Solar Home Light from the people of these communities.
Director Science and Technology, Fida Hussain, has ordered inquiry into the over charging by Sarpanches. He said that the preliminary report has established the allegations of the overcharging.
After the inquiry by the Government these Gujjars and Bakerwals alleged harassment from these Sarpanches. They alleged that after they reported to the Government about the overcharging, the Sarpanches are implicating them in fabricated police cases. Carrying placards, around 40 of them today held a protest demonstration in Srinagar’s Partap Park against these Sarpaches. The protesters met the Director who assured them that Government will take action.
