A Class 9 girl student died while participating in the district-level boxing tournament at District Sports Ground, here today.
Police said K Mareeswari (14) studying in a Government higher secondary school at Soreespuram in Thoothukudi district was selected for participating in the boxing tournament at the district level Khelo India, a national sports event meant to encourage sports among rural people.
After finishing the first round of boxing, she was practicing for the second round when she suddenly collapsed and fell on the ground this afternoon. She was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors referred her to the Government headquarters hospital (GH).
The GH doctors declared her brought dead. Her body was sent for post-mortem.
The cause of her death would be ascertained only after post-mortem, police said. (UNI)
