SDPO injured in attack, suspected militant killed

Srinagar, Dec 24: A Police officer was among two cops critically injured in a militant attack at Bijbehara in Anantnag district of South Kashmir today while a suspected militant was killed after he threw a grenade on troops in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district during search operation against militants.
The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Irshad Ahmad Rather, was escorting Milad procession at village Gouriwan in Bijbehara when militants opened fire at him.
Rather and a police constable, Tanveer Ahmad, were critically injured in the attack and they were referred to Srinagar’s Badami Bagh Cantonment Hospital for treatment.
The area was immediately cordoned off by Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Army.
The attack comes a day after police announced reward for the informants of seven wanted militants of Hizbul Mujahideen belonging to Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attack came 24 hours after police announced a reward for anyone who would provide information about seven most wanted militants of HM hiding in Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar along with IGP SJM Gillani, DIG South Kashmir, Nitish Kumar and SSP Srinagar, Amit Kumar visited 92 Base Army Hospital Badami Bagh this afternoon and enquired about the welfare of SDPO Bijbehara, Irshad Ahmad Rather.
Rajendra enquired about the condition of the injured officer and discussed the treatment being provided by the doctors of the Hospital. The team of doctors apprised the DGP about the treatment of the officer and discussed the future course of action. The DGP asked the doctors to provide best possible treatment to the officer and offered every kind of assistance from the Department to the injured officer.
Police and Army this evening recovered body of a suspected militant near Saderkote Balla area of Ajas in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Army’s 13 Rashtrirya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police launched cordon-and-search operation in the forests of Doodhwan area of Saderkote Balla in Bandipora this afternoon.
A police officer said that one of the persons tried to flee from cordon and when challenged he threw a grenade on the troops. “However, no one was injured. The troops retaliated. The person fled and fell into a ravine.  His body is lying there”, the officer said.
The officer said that the cordon around the area is on and they had information about presence of at least 4 militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba in the area. He said that they will resume the search of the area in the morning.
