SRINAGAR: Security forces today resumed search operation in the dense woods near Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara, where alert troops gunned down two infiltrators in Machil sector early yesterday.
The search operation by security forces was suspended for few hours last night due to darkness only to be resumed with the first light this morning in the woods, official sources said.
They said security forces have sealed the entire forest area to foil any attempt by the militants to escape, they said, adding that it was however, not immediately clear how many militants are there.
No fresh contact was established with the militants after the first encounter immediately after a group of infiltrators sneaked into this side from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Machil sector early yesterday under the cover of darkness.
Two unidentified militants were killed in the encounter. Additional security forces were rushed to the area.
Reports said there could be two to three more militants in the woods. A large number of trained militants are waiting in launch pads near the LoC to sneak into this side before the infiltration routes are closed due to snowfall. However, troops, already on high alert, have intensified night and foot patrolling to thwart any infiltration attempt. (AGENCIES)
